Frazer Jones interviewed Belinda Blackburn, Human Resources Manager at Clifford Chance
Do you have any secrets to having a successful career?
Make the most of opportunities when they present themselves and be open to doing something different – e.g. projects, international moves, taking on additional responsibilities. There are always opportunities to do more and this will give you a chance to expand your experience and gain exposure to interesting assignments. Don't wait for someone to offer you an opportunity, seek it out and offer yourself up when you can see a gap.
Who inspires you and why?
Michelle Obama. She has done an amazing job in a very difficult situation and has been able to universally appeal to a broad range of people due to her strong values and consistent, open approach. I think what makes her particularly outstanding is that she embraces herself as she is and seeks to fulfil her goals with integrity and honesty. By being prominent and confidently putting herself out there, she is a role model to all, not pigeonholed to a particular demographic or gender. Having humility also means she can try and not succeed and still maintain her credibility as she doesn't hold herself out as invincible. It is this very real person that inspires others to take a chance and make a stand for what they believe in or want as she provides hope that anyone can do it and we shouldn't be afraid to try.
What do you think will be the biggest challenge for the generation of women behind you in the workplace?
Having the confidence to choose what suits them in a career and lifestyle. As we have more and more choices, there are decisions to be made and it is easy to be swayed by what society or others think and say you should be or do. Real success is being fulfilled in what you are doing and having a job that compliments and enhances your life. You spend more time at work than anywhere else, you need to enjoy what you do and get the sense of achievement you need which helps you to be your best self in the other areas of your life as well. Having the confidence to go out and seek the right opportunities and ask for them is the first step.
