Frazer Jones interviewed Jennifer Yuan Hsiao, Professional Development Manager, Bain & Company
What advice would you give aspiring women in your industry?
Working in management consulting can be all-consuming and a roller coaster of a ride, as variables like industry, geography, client and team change on a monthly or sometimes weekly basis. Those who thrive in this context are those who see every variable not as something slippery to control but as something to learn from, and those who embrace the kinds of challenges that cultivate true leadership. It's also important to pick the right organization, one in which apprenticeship and mentorship are part of the core DNA.
How do you achieve work life balance?
I've learned over time that balance is a state-of-mind, not the perfect alignment of external variables. If your work gives you a surplus of energy that spills over to family, and vice versa, then the big equation is in order. Then, on a daily basis, it’s all about not sweating the small stuff, staying centered, being grateful, and seeing humor and joy in the micro moments of life.
If senior management within your industry or sector is historically weighted towards males, have you noticed any changes in the last several years?
Absolutely! At Bain in SEA, we are on the brink of doubling the percentage of women in our leadership ranks this year. We work very hard to support a variety of flexible work arrangements, an active sponsorship program and a vibrant culture of dialogue and awareness to move the needle. This is a major inflection point and will hopefully create a virtuous cycle of women role models that inspire the next generation of women leaders at Bain.
