Joanne Gray

Who inspires you and why?
People who love what they do so much that going to work is a real pleasure. There are a few, honestly! And that is real success, in my view. And those who quietly head to trouble zones to help others in need.

What would your advice be to women who are trying to achieve their career ambitions?
Get clear on why you want to do this: if you can find a purpose to drive you forward (and make you happy), it's much easier to keep going. Most people have heard the Simon Sinek quote: "People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it". Then speak to people who are already doing what you want to do and ask for their advice. Sometimes women are reluctant to ask for help as they don't want to appear weak. Asking for help in the right way is a sign of strength, so don't shy away from it... but do be specific about the help you want. Make it as easy as possible for people to spend their precious time to help you.

What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship and mentoring others?
Since setting up my own business, I have learnt so much about the roller-coaster of entrepreneurship... It's been a combination of challenge, opportunity and persistence. Although there have been lots of hairy moments, there has been a lot of reward, too, so I am really grateful for the lessons I have learned and the amazing responses I got when I did ask for help. For mentoring - I'd say a combination of mentoring and active sponsorship is what's needed to really help today's women leaders succeed. When it works well, a mentoring relationship brings a lot to both parties - I'm lucky enough to have some (formal and informal) mentees, and they have taught me a lot. As to leadership - two quotes: "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others." —Jack Welch; and "If you can't influence people, then they will not follow you. And if people won't follow, you are not a leader. That's the Law of Influence." John C. Maxwell
