Susannah Yule

What have you learned about leadership, entrepreneurship and mentoring others?
I’m a big believer that mentors find you – they’re the people who see your potential, advocate and take chances on you, but all too often we miss the opportunity to transform this momentary sponsorship into lasting mentorship, so it’s up to us to capitalise on this natural chemistry. We can often assume that people are too busy or wouldn’t be interested in mentoring us, but in my experience of mentoring others these are often the most rewarding aspects of my career. Of course, we should always be respectful of others’ time but let them decide how they want to spend it, rather than making assumptions.

What advice would you give aspiring women in your industry?
Back yourself, stop apologising and remember that feeling stretched and a bit out of your depth is a good thing – without it, your development is probably plateauing.

We often think of our support network as people who can lift us up during career setbacks, but I think we overlook the importance of people who can wholeheartedly celebrate our successes with us. The people we can call and say “I nailed this” without feeling like we need to soften or play down our achievements. I have a handful of these people and they’re worth their weight in gold.
