Learning & Development
Learning and Development or Training Departments are ultimately responsible for the development of all employees within their organisation. An obvious example of training activity would be an instructor-led, classroom-based course, designed to achieve behavioural change. In practice, different people learn in different ways, and certain methods are more appropriate for different levels of staff. This results in a variety of learning techniques being deployed by organisations. Other methods could include coaching, on-the job-training or outdoor training (often used for team-building exercises).
Learning and development professionals may be involved in the entire training lifecycle, which includes needs analysis (establishing training requirements), design (creating training materials), delivery (presenting and facilitating the courses) and evaluation.
Entry level roles in Learning and Development will probably have the job title of Assistant, Coordinator or Administrator, and the role is likely to be very administration-focused. Duties are likely to include the maintaining and updating of training records, data input of training data, diary management, assisting in employee inductions, and creating evaluation reports. These roles generally require six months’ administration experience and an indication of your desire to work in the overall HR function, such as a CIPD qualification. Salaries (dependent on sector) will usually be £18,000 – £25,000.
Progression from the roles detailed above would be to an Officer or Adviser level position. This is likely to be a more hands-on role, acting as a point of contact for managers in the business.
