Placement year advice
For HR graduates, it is becoming increasingly important to complete a work placement year in HR prior to gaining their degree. When you begin your job search post-university, one year’s HR experience will place you at the top of the wish list for businesses looking to hire. It will make you more marketable as a budding HR professional, because you will have both the theoretical and practical experience that are vital in a competitive job market.
Do not be overly concerned about whether your placement year is within a specialist or generalist HR environment. Neither should you worry about whether you spend it in the private or public sector, as any basic HR practice will prove to be invaluable. While you may be tempted to seek a role offering as much business strategy experience as possible, this will actually be of little value at such a preliminary stage of your career. A year spent as an administrator within an HR department will give you a grounding that will undoubtedly help you secure a role post-graduation.
(We are talking to our clients about the possibility of offering regular industrial placements for HR graduates. These will be posted on this website as soon as they become available.)
