A more accurate description of dyslexia is a genetic difference in someone\u2019s ability to\u00a0process information. This simply means that a person with dyslexia may think and learn differently than a neurotypical person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dyslexia is part of the <strong>neurodiversity<\/strong> spectrum, which includes other conditions related to processing or cognitive differences, such as ADHD, autism, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, and Tourette&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Australian Dyslexia Association, around 10% of the Australian population are dyslexic \u2013 that means <strong>1 in 10<\/strong> of your colleagues may be affected and may require accommodations in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1011\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.frazerjones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/Dyslexia-and-its-imacts.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.frazerjones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/Dyslexia-and-its-imacts.png 1011w, https:\/\/www.frazerjones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/Dyslexia-and-its-imacts-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.frazerjones.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/06\/Dyslexia-and-its-imacts-768x428.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1011px) 100vw, 1011px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-signs-of-dyslexia-that-may-be-observed-in-the-workplace\">Signs of dyslexia that may be observed in the workplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Understandably, revealing a learning difficulty can be a daunting prospect in the workplace and this anxiety can hold back those with dyslexia from asking for help. This means that their behaviors can occasionally be misunderstood as a lack of ability, dedication, and inattention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most commonly, symptoms of dyslexia include struggling to formulate thoughts quickly enough to participate in conversations and confusing words within sentences and letters within words. Not only that, but struggling to schedule work, making deadlines and recollecting and recording the contents of meetings and messages are frequent signs of dyslexia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-managing-dyslexia-and-neurodiversity-in-the-workplace\">Managing dyslexia and neurodiversity in the workplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the workplace those with dyslexia may struggle to get their thoughts on paper, including trouble writing emails, reports, briefs, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. It can take longer to read and understand what they are reading. Employees with dyslexia may need extra time to complete tasks especially those involving reading, writing and editing. Many dyslexics don\u2019t feel it\u2019s safe to disclose their dyslexia to their direct line manager. Instead, they hide it and implement their own compensatory strategies instead of accessing the reasonable workplace adjustments they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognising the signs and encouraging an open conversation about dyslexia, will ensure that those living with it, can reach their full potential and enjoy work, whilst feeling fully supported by their employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can employers support employees with dyslexia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Undertake whole of organisation awareness training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide dyslexia specific workplace training for managers, leaders, and HR<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating safe environments for employees to feel it\u2019s okay to disclose their disability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create easy access to workplace adjustments that support spelling, grammar, writing and reading<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work within a strength-based framework rather than focusing on deficits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-addressing-recruitment-challenges-faced-by-dyslexic\">Addressing recruitment challenges faced by Dyslexic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dyslexic individuals face\u00a0significant challenges\u00a0in the recruitment process, particularly when it comes to written communication, standardised testing, interviewing, and a lack of understanding from employers and recruiters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To overcome these barriers,&nbsp;employers and recruiters can adjust their recruitment strategies for dyslexic individuals and educate others about dyslexia.
