IWD2021 #ChooseToChallenge: Ingrid D’Lima

What does “choose to challenge” mean to you? 

Women are often seen favourably when they advocate for others but unfavourably when an individual advocates for herself. This also alludes to why many men go for jobs they might not be totally qualified for and women hold themselves back. For me, my motto “choose to challenge” is about breaking those stereotypes, leading by example, championing not only those around me but celebrating my wins and taking pride in my own achievements. By not being afraid to show up every day in my authentic best, I know I’m giving others the permission to do the same. 

What is one lesson you learnt the hard way? 

I can be very impatient and even though it does work in my favour when I need to get things done, it can also cause upset – like when you think you’ve missed out on an opportunity, or don’t get the job you want, or get passed up for promotion. Patience and managing disappointment is the one lesson I’ve learnt and continue to learn. When you want something, the universe answers in three ways: Yes. Yes, but not yet. No, I have something even better planned for you. When I’m having a negative experience, I have to remind myself of a line from the New Earth “Why am I having this experience, because it’s the experience I need right now”. 

How can female leaders ensure they get a seat at the table? 

By not worrying too much about being liked, but by being authentic and not being afraid to speak their truth. This all comes down to knowing who you are, your values, what’s important to you and why you want to go where you want to go. Not everyone has the luxury of getting their dream job – but if you know where your passion lies you can bring it into your day job in some form or the other and that helps you to be the best you can be. The commitment of bringing your best authentic self to work every day will get you to any seat you want to be on. 

What is one thing women don’t talk about enough? 

Women don’t speak enough about their own achievements, their wins and what they are great at!
