Payroll in 2025: why now’s the time to future-proof your career

In today’s evolving business environment, payroll has never been more critical – or more complex. As we move through 2025, professionals in the payroll space are facing new challenges, new opportunities, and a host of technological advancements that are reshaping payroll functions across every sector.

John O’Brien, Executive Director at Frazer Jones and the UK’s leading executive payroll recruiter, shares his latest insights into the state of the payroll job market – and what payroll professionals need to focus on if they want to stay ahead.

Payroll is shifting – again

The structure of payroll functions has evolved over time. Historically part of finance, payroll later moved under HR, then to reward. Now, John explains, it’s making its way back to finance and accounts in many organisations.

“It’s coming full circle,” says John. “Payroll processes are so closely aligned with financial compliance, it makes sense that more businesses are moving the function back under finance.”

This shift is especially relevant for HR professionals considering a transition into payroll. For those exploring a new career path, understanding where the payroll function sits within the business – and how it supports other teams – is critical.

At the same time, adaptability and communication skills are more important than ever. Payroll professionals must collaborate with both finance and HR, using data to support informed decisions on everything from employee satisfaction to global compensation models.

London remains at the heart of global payroll

As companies expand internationally and remote work becomes more common, global payroll functions are under pressure to become more integrated and efficient.

According to John, the US market is growing fast – and UK-based payroll professionals with US experience are in high demand. Gaining this type of experience can be a key way to future-proof your career.

“If you don’t have US exposure yet, now’s the time,” he says. “That skill set is becoming essential.”

Despite the rise of international markets like APAC and EMEA, London still holds a unique advantage when it comes to supporting global payroll operations. Its central time zone makes it an ideal hub for overseeing payroll systems and operations across continents – from the US in the afternoon to APAC in the morning.

The future of payroll is strategic – and digital

As automation, artificial intelligence and real-time data become embedded into core payroll functions, there’s a growing demand for professionals who understand not only how to run payroll but how to optimise it.

From AI-powered platforms to advanced payroll software, the function is becoming more data-driven than ever. Understanding metrics, payroll data security, and how to streamline payroll operations is now essential to long-term success in the field.

“Today’s payroll leaders need to go beyond payslips,” explains John. “You need to think about cybersecurity, user experience, and how to deliver accurate data to support business decision-making.”

Tools like Excel remain fundamental, but the expectations are growing. Employers want payroll professionals who can drive continuous improvement and implement new technologies that support better employee experience and boost employee wellbeing.

Career advice for payroll professionals in 2025

For those looking to grow their careers, John highlights several areas to focus on:

  • Build global exposure – especially with US and APAC payroll.
  • Lead change – get involved in payroll software implementation, automation initiatives and payroll transformation.
  • Focus on compliance – stay on top of evolving legislation and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Upskilling matters – consider professional development and certifications in global payroll, automation, or AI-driven analytics.
  • Stay informed – join payroll forums, attend webinars, and follow thought leaders on LinkedIn to stay ahead of new technologies and regulatory changes.

“Payroll is no longer a back-office task,” says John. “It’s a strategic function that impacts employee experience, financial forecasting, and overall business success.”

For senior payroll professionals ready to take the next step, now is the time to act. The payroll job market in 2025 is competitive, fast-moving, and full of potential – but only for those ready to evolve with it.
