What is employee relations?

Employee relations professionals are responsible for nurturing a productive and harmonious work environment. These professionals handle a variety of responsibilities. Day-to-day this can be from resolving conflicts and managing employee engagement to advising on legal and regulatory compliance. Employee relations professionals play a critical role in shaping company culture and employee satisfaction.

Typical job titles include Employee Relations Coordinator, Employee Relations Advisor, Employee Relations Manager, Head of Employee Relations and Director of Employee Relations.

How do I hire an employee relations professional?

The first step is to clearly define the purpose and scope of the role. What specific challenges or opportunities will the employee relations professional need to address? What skills and experience are crucial for success in your organisation? Do you want this person to be a full-time employee, or part-time? As with many roles now, you should consider offering hybrid working.

You’ll then need to think about where this employee relations specialist might come from. Often, human resources generalists move into an employee relations role. So, you could consider looking at HR professionals currently in HR Manager, HR Business Partner (HRBPs) or HR Advisor roles. These professionals will have experience in managing employee relations issues and other transferrable skills such as stakeholder management and managing HR teams.

Our recruitment team can help you refine these requirements and identify the ideal candidate who aligns with your company’s goals and values.
