Australia–UK Working Holiday Visa FAQs: Requirements and key changes

If you’re a UK passport holder thinking about heading to Australia for work and travel, or an Aussie looking for an adventure in the UK and Europe, the recent changes to the Working Holiday visa could make your journey overseas much easier. Thanks to the Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), new arrangements have come into effect that expand eligibility and remove previous work requirements.

Here’s what you need to know before starting your visa application.

Australia and the UK Working Holiday Visa

What’s changed?

The Australian Government has introduced new rules that benefit United Kingdom citizens under the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) programme. These updates apply to the subclass 417 visa and are designed to make the experience more flexible and accessible.

Here are the key changes:

  • Age limit extended: UK passport holders can now apply between the ages of 18 and 35. This wider age range gives more British nationals the chance to live and work in Australia.
  • No more specified work: previously, visa holders had to complete farm work or other jobs in regional areas to qualify for a second or third Working Holiday visa. That requirement has now been removed for UK citizens.
  • Maximum stay increased: Working Holiday visa holders can now stay in Australia for up to three years by applying for three separate 12-month visas. This includes the second and third Working Holiday visa options.
  • Dual nationals benefit too: if you previously entered Australia on a Working Holiday visa using another eligible passport, such as Irish or Canadian, you can still access the new arrangements by applying with your British passport.
  • COVID-affected visa holders: if your travel plans were disrupted by the pandemic, you may still be eligible for the full three-year stay under the new rules.

What does this mean for working holiday makers?

These changes make the application process more straightforward and open up new opportunities for backpackers and young professionals. Whether you’re planning to explore Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, gain work experience, or simply enjoy life in Australia, the updated visa arrangements offer more flexibility than ever before.

The removal of specified work requirements also means you can focus on finding roles that suit your career goals, rather than being limited to regional or agricultural jobs. This is especially helpful for those considering permanent residence later on.

Other visa options

In addition to the subclass 417 visa, UK citizens may also be eligible for the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462), depending on their circumstances. The Youth Mobility Scheme and the Innovation and Early Careers Skills Exchange Pilot (IECSEP) also offer alternative pathways for British citizens aged 21 to 45.

What to consider before applying

  • Eligibility: make sure you meet the age limit and passport requirements before starting your visa application.
  • Processing times: these can vary, so plan ahead and check the Department of Home Affairs website for the latest updates.
  • Visa arrangements: if you’re applying for a second Working Holiday visa (or a third one), ensure you understand how the new rules apply to your situation.

Australians moving to the UK: what are the options?

If you’re an Australian passport holder looking to live and work in the United Kingdom, the Youth Mobility Scheme offers a popular route. This visa allows eligible applicants aged 18 to 35 to live and work in the UK for up to two years with the option to extend for an additional year if you’re from Australia (as well as Canada or New Zealand). You’ll need to show GBP 2,530 in savings, pay an application fee and the healthcare surcharge, and meet other eligibility requirements.

Australians can also apply for other UK visas depending on their circumstances, including Skilled Worker visas, Student visas, or family visas if joining relatives already in the UK. The application process is managed online, and successful applicants receive either an eVisa or a vignette in their passport, depending on the visa type.
