Title: PayrollSpecalist (12‑Month Fixed Contract)

Location: Fully Remote

Employment Type: Contract (12 Months)

Compensation: Negotiable

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to support a major clean‑up, audit, and process‑improvement initiative within the payroll function. This is a fully remote, 18‑month contract role ideal for someone with strong payroll operations expertise and a track record of identifying gaps, improving accuracy, and strengthening compliance. The specialist will also support daily payroll operations while driving long‑term improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Audit & Clean‑Up

  • Conduct a comprehensive audit of payroll data, records, and system inputs.
  • Identify discrepancies, errors, and compliance risks; implement corrective measures.
  • Reconcile historical payroll information to ensure accuracy and integrity.

Process Improvement

  • Evaluate current payroll workflows and recommend improvements to increase efficiency.
  • Document updated processes and build scalable, repeatable operating procedures.
  • Strengthen internal controls to minimize risk and improve data accuracy.

Compliance & Risk Reduction

  • Ensure payroll practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Identify compliance gaps and implement solutions to reduce exposure.
  • Partner with HR, Finance, and external vendors to address compliance issues.

Daily Payroll Operations

  • Support day‑to‑day payroll processing for multi‑state employee populations.
  • Manage updates related to new hires, terminations, status changes, tax updates, and deductions.
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Assist in preparing reports and payroll metrics as needed.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of payroll experience, preferably in a multi‑state environment.
  • Strong understanding of payroll regulations, tax requirements, and compliance.
  • Experience with payroll audits and process improvement initiatives.
  • Proficiency with payroll systems (any platform); advanced Excel skills preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment.
