Senior Director of Occupational Health
We are partnering with a high‑profile, mission‑driven organization to appoint a Senior Director of Occupational Health in a newly elevated, enterprise‑level role.
This position is broader and more strategic than a traditional Occupational Health or EHS role, with accountability spanning people safety, health governance, and enterprise risk. The role operates with high visibility, partnering closely with Legal, HR, and senior leadership across a complex, unionized environment.
Role Overview
The Senior Director of Occupational Health will set and lead the organization’s occupational health and workplace safety strategy, balancing depth of expertise with enterprise‑wide leadership and influence.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining and executing occupational health and workplace safety strategy across a large, unionized workforce
- Enterprise oversight of OSHA compliance, incident investigation, and risk management
- Leadership of workers’ compensation, ADA/FMLA accommodations, and high‑touch return‑to‑work programs
- Advising senior leaders on complex, sensitive employee health matters in a highly visible operating environment
- Leading and developing a specialist team across safety, workers’ compensation, and leaves/accommodations, with accountability for governance, vendor oversight, and program effectiveness rather than personally owning every technical detail
Operating Environment
This organization takes a hands‑on and rigorous approach to occupational health:
- Leaves and accommodations are not fully outsourced
- Occupational health services operate 24/7 at certain facilities
- Employee health matters are reviewed thoroughly rather than escalated away
Structure & Stakeholder Engagement
- Hybrid working model (3 days onsite in Manhattan)
- Reports into the Legal function and works in close partnership with senior HR leadership
- Regular exposure to executive and leadership‑team stakeholders
Candidate Profile
We are seeking a senior occupational health or people safety leader who:

- Is comfortable balancing strategic leadership with operational rigor
- Has credibility partnering with Legal, HR, and senior executives
- Brings strong leadership capability across specialist teams and external vendors
