I’ve had the privilege of working with Waseem Mian, both as a client and a candidate, over several years, building a truly exceptional professional relationship. As a specialist recruiter in the HR technology and analytics space, I’ve gained invaluable insights from Waseem, who consistently shares his expertise with generosity and depth.

Waseem’s career spans over two decades, including a 13-year tenure at Travelport where he became HRIS Director, and further leadership roles at American Express, Xplor and HG Capital. He is a pioneer in the HiBob ecosystem, known for his strong grasp of HR systems, digital transformation and data-driven HR practices.

In this interview, we explore the evolution of HRIS, the future of HR technology, and how HR professionals can future-proof their careers while driving strategic initiatives across their organisations.

The evolution of HRIS and its expanding role

When Waseem began his career in 2002, HRIS was primarily a basic database, often neglected and inefficient. “It was just a place to dump data,” he recalls, “and you’d spend days reconciling mismatches between HR, Finance and IT.”

Today, HRIS is no longer a siloed system – it’s the backbone of organisational HR functions. It now supports talent acquisition, performance management, payroll integrations and employee engagement, while providing a single source of truth for real-time decision-making. With APIs and self-service tools now commonplace, HR systems can streamline onboarding, automate data collection, and empower HR teams to focus on strategic HR and business goals.

Waseem emphasises how the role of HRIS has transformed: “It now requires a deep understanding of core HR, recruitment, reward, talent and even compliance.” That means HR professionals entering the space need to continuously upskill in both systems and people analytics, to handle increasing data volumes and enable smarter, data-driven decision-making.

Why HiBob stands out in financial services and private equity

Waseem has led multiple implementations of HiBob and is one of the most experienced HRIS professionals in this space. He explains why HiBob has become a go-to provider for firms seeking to optimise their HR processes:

  • Its intuitive user experience drives employee satisfaction and engagement
  • Integrations with Slack, Entra ID and ADP simplify HR operations
  • It’s scalable and low-maintenance, requiring as little as 0.5 FTE to run
  • Implementation timelines are short – Waseem led a rollout across six countries in under three months

He notes that HiBob’s adaptability and clarity around pricing make it particularly attractive for growing companies looking to streamline systems and focus on core HR strategies.

The rise of AI and automation in HR technology

HR technology is evolving quickly – and artificial intelligence is at the heart of that transformation. “We’re already seeing AI-powered functionality improving everything from onboarding to payroll,” Waseem says.

AI-driven systems offer predictive analytics, automate administrative tasks, and guide employees through HR processes like policy compliance and benefits enrolment. Over the next 12–18 months, Waseem expects more HR teams to adopt machine learning tools and chatbots, enabling better decision-making and improved user experience across the employee lifecycle.

These technological advancements are not about replacing people – they’re about enhancing human resources capabilities, boosting data security, and enabling HR leaders to make informed decisions with speed and confidence.

How HRIS professionals can stand out in the job market

Waseem is passionate about professional development for HRIS specialists and offers clear advice for building a future-ready career path:

  • Be transparent about your skill set in interviews – don’t pretend to know everything
  • Emphasise problem-solving over process-following
  • Showcase your ability to bridge communication between HR, Finance, IT and senior stakeholders
  • Understand how data-driven insights contribute to business success and align with performance metrics

Companies are looking for HRIS professionals who can work across regions, adapt to global HR systems and optimise payroll systems while navigating regulatory complexity. The ability to connect employee data with broader business metrics is now a core skill – and the most successful candidates are those who combine technical proficiency with strategic thinking.

All-in-one vs modular HR systems: what’s the future?

According to Waseem, while all-in-one platforms have their place, modular HR tech solutions are gaining momentum. Businesses want the flexibility to choose best-in-class tools for specific HR functions – whether it’s learning, performance reviews or workforce planning – and connect them via secure API integrations.

This trend supports the growing need for agile HR departments that can scale operations quickly, without being locked into monolithic platforms. It also reflects a shift toward data-driven HR and the desire for more actionable insights.

Where is HR technology heading next?

Waseem predicts that the future of HR tech will centre on speed, intelligence, and integration. “HRIS will go from being useful to being essential,” he says. “It’s becoming the central nervous system of every organisation – guiding talent management, strategic initiatives, and every HR decision.”

The fusion of automation, analytics tools, and integrated HR data will redefine how HR teams operate – from enhancing employee experience to reducing turnover rates and identifying skill gaps in real time.

In the future of HR, tech isn’t a nice-to-have – it’s a survival tool. Businesses that don’t invest in HR technology will fall behind, while those that do will unlock new opportunities to optimise HR strategies, boost retention, and drive long-term business success.

If you’re an HRIS professional looking to explore your next move – or if you’d like to share your own experience of implementing HR tech solutions – we’d love to hear from you.
